Death of the Human Ego
Psychedelic Therapy— A Light Read
The Project
A book of educational articles on psychadelic therapy
Death of the Human Ego is a collection of articles that explores the world of psychedelic therapy. Psychedelic therapy has a history longer than we know, yet it only entered U.S. culture during the government testing of LSD in the 40’s. Since then the illegalization of psychedelic drugs has created a community of underground therapists, popularized retreats to countries with historical psychedelic traditions, and limited the academic study of the these drugs. This collection is meant to educate on the usage of psychedelic therapy and why it may be the key to our happiness as we move into the 21st century.
Breaking away from the stereotypical visuals of psychedelics
Illustrations
I wanted to stray away from the traditional visual language of psychedelics to keep with the scientific journal aesthetic. The illustrations abstract peoples personal experiences within the articles into digital collages. Instead of the standard flowy, organic style of psychadelic graphics I went with a grittier shattered time look to visualize their psychadelic experiences.
An excuse to bind books is a good project
The Little Details
This book was a great opportunity to dive deep into the technical side of typography. I styled the book after the look of scientific journals and took my typeface choice from government test files. The articles were filled with links and sources to help educate the reader. Transfering to print, I repurposed footnotes to add links and sites to the content. All the little navigation pieces and margin text allowed for fun experimental page layout with tight gutters and wide margins.
